If Advent/Christmas music in your parish is really awful...

David,

I have mixed feelings about this post.

An academic on another site often used to say (speaking about scripture) that 'text without context is subtext'. So, while you've given links that lead to the origin of this truly awful butchering, you kind of leave the reader open to wonder what your motives are especially with the generalised swipe at parish music.

Don't get me wrong, I've seen some truly awful attempts at music in parishes and wonder if 1) they've actually heard what the they produce and/or 2) if nobody in the parish has enough courage to tell them how awful they are and/or 3) surely silence is better than this?

Let's just say that IMO, the post is more likely to be come across as someone who has a superior attitude to music rather than someone who is humble in the use of his own God-given skills.

I say this as someone who has come to an appreciation of 'classic/traditional' church music late in life and is still in awe by the talent of those who've had the gift all their lives and those greats, gone before us, who have contributed such amazing, sublime, faith-enhancing art.
