Küng "less qualified than most" to comment on Vatican II

A remarkable article in the Irish Times ("Küng invokes spirit of Second Vatican Council he hardly saw") from one who was there, Bishop Michael Smith (Bishop of Meath). According to the paper, Bishop Meath attended all 168 days of the Second Vatican Council for which he and 11 other young priests prepared the official record. In contrast, by Bishop Smith's account, it seems that Dr Küng actually appears to have declined involvement in the event about which he so freely lectures everyone else. There are all sorts of narratives about the Second Vatican Council, but it is always interesting to hear the story from "someone who was there".

Kung has never been anything other than a self-serving publicity seeker.

King should have gone over to my mob the proddies if he was honest enough about his theological position. I know that his books in the late 1960s' were recommended reading at the Churches of Christ theol college in QLD ,when my brother was there ,and that some of Kung's comments raised my father 's eyebrows with the comment" I wonder if his church tolerates that view "?

Poor Herr Doktor Hans Küng. He and good Father Godfrey Diekmann never quite had their hopes realized.

It's long past time for Küng to move on.

This is pretty unedifying stuff, David. What on earth does 'less qualified than most' mean?

I have no problem with people having a go at Kung for what he says and writes, but this kind of nonsense has more in common with pettyness and jealousy than substantive criticism.

I happened to read over the obituaries to Ralph McInerny in First Things today, and saw in the comments, a quote from McInerny someone liked :

"The letter of Vatican II is one thing, the so-called "spirit of Vatican II" is not the Holy Spirit."

Just throwin it out there.
