Pope Meets Queen Elizabeth for pleasant fireside chat...

...about four hundred and forty years too late.

But, as they say in the classics, better late than never!

As Her Madge said:
Your Holiness, in recent times you have said that ‘religions can never become vehicles of hatred, that never by invoking the name of God can evil and violence be justified’. Today, in this country, we stand united in that conviction. We hold that freedom to worship is at the core of our tolerant and democratic society. On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom I wish you a most fruitful and memorable visit.

They're indoors, yet Edinburgh is wearing an overcoat and the Queen has a pair of gloves on. It gives the distinct impression that they are trying to hint to the pope that they're going out, so would he leave now please?

Either that, or they're both very cold, and the cheerless empty grate in the background is due to budget cuts.

Fulton Sheen had some fairly stinging remarks to make, I seem to recall, about the modern Anglo-American cult of "tolerance" invoked here.

Mmm. It wasn't quite as warm and friendly as I tried to make out, was it? I wonder if this was the only time PBXVI will be catching up with ERII on the visit?
